I built this instrument for a theatrical play based on the book 'The Third Policeman' by Flan O'Brian. In his book O'Brian brilliantly describes a contraption that collects sound and other energy and converts it to light based on a theory regarding omnium.

I designed a discrete analoge synthesizer whose parameters are controlled by light sensors. These sensors measure the output of a complex light generator located behind a small gap between the two rollers of an old laundry mangle (wringer). By slowly turning the wooden rollers the width and shape of the gap changes. And so does the sound of the Instrument.
